Every year things change down at Worthy Farm. That is why Glastonbury is still relevant after 50 years. Stages come and go and areas arise from nowhere. Here is what’s new for Glastonbury this year.
New in Shangri-La
Shangri-La always pushes the boat out when it comes to change. Every year there is something different. I love it because no matter how many times you go to Glastonbury, you will always be discovering new things.
Arrivals
Glastonbury’s first dedicated space for South Asian music. I am really looking forward to discovering this area. I remember back at Glastonbury 2010 we ended up dancing to Bangrha outside a food stall for hours. The owners had it blasting out and came and joined us.
This is what it says about Arrivals. “The visitors to Arrivals will be transported through a portal to an alien jungle planet, immersed by an audio visual world coded in solar punk, carnivorous plants, cyborg beasts and space pirates.
The space bridges nostalgia to futurism, a sensory feast of vivid lights and colours, remixing the worlds of pulp sci-fi classics within a newly redefined South Asian aesthetic.”
Peace
I can’t find anything about this new area in Shangri-La. I have a feeling it is replacing The Truth Stage as that is not on this year’s lineup. I am sure it will have amazing acts knowing the organisers of Shangri-La.
New in Woodsies
Woodsies made its debut at Glastonbury 2023. Taking over from the old John Peel stage this area also incorporates The Woods.
It is one of my favourite areas of the festival and seeing what is new this year I think it will be even more so.
The Tree Stage
The Tree Stage is an immersive outdoor venue set beneath an oak decor canopy. It will have a mix of arts, music, science and folk. The main performances here will be after the last act has played on The Woodsies Stage.
New in Silver Hayes
Silver Hayes adds something new every year. From The Levels to The Information there is always innovation going on in this area. This year is no exception.
Room
I love the idea of this place. “Room” will serve as a wellness space, featuring sound baths, breathwork, guided meditation, yoga & other activities. As a person who meditates every day this is right up my street.
Assembly
Taking over from The Wow stage is Assembly. This is the area’s first dedicated indoor space. Indoor spaces at Glastonbury are handy in all types of weather. If it’s raining they provide a dry place and if it is too hot they provide much-needed shade.
New in The Park
The Park area of Glastonbury is one of my favourites. It is so big it feels like a festival within its own right. My favourite night time spot The Rabbit Hole is being replaced with 2 new venues this year.
The Wishing Well
A place to ignite your deepest desires and unfurl your wildest wishes. This sounds right up my street!
Scissors
A femme-queer venue where anything can happen. Head to Scissors for a cut, or just come along to enjoy some of the daily talks.
Relax in the beer garden and play pool, or catch a movie in Flick Shack. With nightfall comes a twilight roster filling Kiki’s nightclub, where kaleidoscopic walls will keep you dancing til dawn.
They both sound great. I can’t wait to see them on the farm.
New in Arcadia
The Spider is no more. Long live The Dragonfly and Bugg!
Here is all the information we have for the new changes in 2024:
Arcadia kicks off a whole new chapter at Glastonbury with its boldest installation yet. The Dragonfly, a giant biomechanical creature, will awaken at the heart of an evolved geometric space, exploring ideas around renewal, our relationship with technology and how we adapt to a changing climate.
Roaming both the Arcadia field and the wider festival will be the dragonfly’s mobile, amphibious cousin – the Bug. Built from submarine moulds, the Bug comes alive on six wheels of self-contained sculpture, spreading the carnival spirit with its own eclectic lineup and a custom sound system hand-built by Minirigs.
2024 also sees a whole new daytime dimension to Arcadia’s world – an interactive kids area open to families. The Alchemists’ Playground is a collaboration with constructive play specialists Woodland Tribe – a forge of ideas, workshops and creative adventure.
As soon as I hear about any more new areas at Glastonbury, I will add them to this post.
