The Other Stage

Glastonbury Festival Info, Stages & Areas / April 18, 2024 by Paul Farrugia / Leave a Comment

The Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival is the second largest stage down at Worthy Farm after the world-famous Pyramid Stage. It made its debut in its current style in 1997. However, there has been a stage in the same spot since the late 80’s.

In a recent survey I did in my Facebook group, The Other Stage was the clear favourite stage out of all the main stages at Glastonbury.

Who has played on The Other Stage?

Maybe that is because of some of the artists that have played on this stage. Back when it was curated as The NME stage the likes of Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Massive Attack have played on this stage.

Orbital on The Other Stage

In 1994 Orbital played a legendary set on The NME Stage which some say pushed dance music into the mainstream. I think that is why so many Glasto goers like this Stage. It normally has a more eclectic lineup than The Pyramid Stage.

One thing The Pyramid Stage didn’t do is sink (there have been 2 fires though). In 1997 there was so much rain at Glastonbury that The Other Stage started to sink! I am not sure if anyone was performing at the time.

Favourite Sets

I have seen many memorable performances down at this stage. PJ Harvey, The Hives and The Pet Shop Boys all spring to mind. The Other Stage normally has a secret act that opens the festival first thing on Friday morning. Head down to it at around 10:30 to discover who it is.

I always recommend to new people attending Glastonbury not to park themselves in front of the main stages. What makes Glastonbury unique is the variety of things to see and do. That said, watching a great performance on the main stages should be part of that Glastonbury experience. Just make sure you vary it up.
