Coldplay Glastonbury. Love them or hate them, Coldplay are a quintessential Glastonbury headliner. The crowd in front of The Pyramid Stage wants to be entertained and have a sing-along, and Coldplay fits that bill perfectly.

How many times have Coldplay headlined Glastonbury?

Coldplay have headlined Glastonbury a record 5 times. Their first headline performance was in 2002, followed by headlining in 2005, 2011, 2016, and most recently in 2024.
Why have Coldplay played so much at Glastonbury?

There are a few reasons. One, they deliver the goods. I have seen them twice down at Worthy Farm. In 2024 and 2016. 2016 was a muddy Glastonbury, and while we were there, the Brexit result came in.
To say the atmosphere at the festival was flat is an understatement. Coldplay had the unwelcome honour of closing the festival before we all went to a much-altered United Kingdom.
They lifted us way more than I thought was possible. It is truly amazing the power of music and a crowd being together as one.
At the 2024 festival, the atmosphere was completely different. It felt like a giant party where over 100,000 people were celebrating life. I felt that Glastonbury 2024 got back into its stride. Both Glastonbury 2022 & 2023 still had the scars of Covid and lockdowns, and it seemed like the crowd was still finding their feet. Coldplay 2024 made sure those feet were dancing.
Coldplay and The Pilton Party

Another reason why they are always welcome is that they filled in at the last minute for The Pilton Party (Glastonbury’s one-day festival in September). The Strokes were meant to be playing at The Pilton Party in 2001, but they pulled out at the last minute.
Emily Eavis suggested to her Dad, Michael, that Coldplay should fill in. Chris Martin agreed to fill the slot despite having a gig booked in Paris for the same day. So he told Emily (who called him up) to book a flight for after their gig in Paris. Chris and Jonny arrived on time in Pilton to headline.
As a thank you, Michael offered Coldplay the Friday night headline slot the following year. Here are some of the quotes from both Michael and Chris:
Chris added that while at the Pilton Party, he had asked the festival boss who was headlining the year after, only to be told by Eavis, “We thought you’d do the Friday”. “I said, ‘You thought what now?’,” Martin said. “I basically nearly dropped my Smarties and that’s how we came to do it. That was a big deal – it still is. Every time we play Glastonbury, it’s a huge deal.”
“So I said, ‘For this, Chris, you can headline the festival next year. Seriously – you will headline next year. I’m pleading with you to do it.’ And then I had the agent and management on the phone saying he wasn’t quite ready and all that kind of thing and I said, ‘But he is, he’s an absolutely perfect headliner. And, of course, he was – and he’s never looked back since that gig, has he?
The Solo Performance at The Pilton Party
Coldplay were scheduled to headline The Pilton Party in 2000. Jonny Buckland fell ill with glandular fever shortly before the gig. Instead of cancelling, Chris Martin did a solo set. He told the audience they could leave if he was crap. The crowd loved it, and the love affair between the festival and the band started right there.
Have Coldplay played on any other Glastonbury Stages?

Yes, before headlining the Pyramid Stage for the first time in 2002, Coldplay had played on The New Bands Tent in 1999 and The Other Stage in 2000.
I am in no doubt that we will be seeing Coldplay down on Worthy Farm in the future. Who knows, they might even fill the legends slot in 20 years.
See you on the farm.
